Cave: i'm so lonesome i could cry von Hank Williams. Glen Frey von den
Eagles
wird
kaum etwas dagegen haben, dass Cash sein 1973er desperado
covert,
sonst würde er nicht selber mitsingen... Am interessantesten ist
vielleicht personal jesus, dass sich gar nicht sonderlich verändert
hat zum Original von Depeche Mode.
Ich bin geneigt zu erwähnen,
dass ich den ein oder anderen Gänsehaut-Song, der noch auf solitary
man war, vermisse. So hatte ich mir beispielsweise von dem sicherlich
schönen bridge over troubled water, gerade aus dem Mund von
Cash, mehr Charisma versprochen - dämliche Erwartungshaltung... Aber
wohl ist mir bei der Kritik nicht, denn jedes negative Wort über the
man comes around ist eigentlich eines zu viel... Überflüssig
zu erwähnen, dass man Aussetzer vergeblich sucht.
Wer die Vorgänger mochte,
kann hier wieder blind zugreifen!

Gefängnis. Nicht nur das, es ist auch seine erfolgreichste Scheibe:
14 Wochen in den US-Top 10 und 20 Wochen die Nr.1 in den Country-Charts.
Von diesem Album stammt auch seine höchste Single-Hit-Notierung der
60er: a boy named sue.
Vielleicht ist das der Zeitpunkt
etwas gegen ein immer wieder auftauchendes Gerücht zu unternehmen?!
Der Song folsom prison blues mit der prägnanten und fälschlicherweise
als autobiographisch angesehenen Zeile "I shot a man in Reno, just to watch
him die" und seine Konzerte in Gefängnissen schüren immer wieder
das Gerücht, Cash hätte "eingesessen". Dazu Cash in seiner Autobiographie:
"In meinen Amphetamin-Jahren verbrachte ich ein paar Nächte im Gefängnis,
aber ich kam immer am nächsten Morgen wieder raus." Und weiter: "In
Wahrheit habe ich zu keiner Zeit und an keinem Ort jemals eine Strafe in
irgendeiner Strafanstalt verbüßt. (...) Es tut mir leid, aber
diese Zeile in folsom prison blues ist frei erfunden."
